Two Powerful New Mechanics debut — Brazen and Blessed, and Blink gets an upgrade!
Brazen
The first of these new mechanics is Brazen. This mechanic is on spells, creatures and lands. There are 24 cards in Broken Borders with this keyword. It triggers when a spell is played or the creature or land comes into play. Here is the official rules text regarding Brazen:
Brazen — When (THIS) comes into play, you may search your library for a card named (THIS) and remove it from the game. Please note that the amount needed to be removed and subsequently the wording can change.
Here are a few sample cards to show you what you may be faced with in terms of Brazen:
This mechanic allows drafters to think about how many copies they should be looking for in their decks, along with what the best constructed strategy should be for the more powerful rares. Blessed
The second mechanic introduced in the set is Blessed. This is a very narrow mechanic that only inhabits four cards and can be provided via two other cards. This was more of a "Sweep"-like mechanic that is here to create flavor and an interesting aspect on what would otherwise be vanilla cards. This mechanic is relative only to creatures.
Here is the official wording of Blessed as it would be written on a creature card:
Blessed X - While you have X or more cards in your hand, (THIS) can't be the target of spells or abilities your opponent's control.
Here are two creatures which have the mechanic:
When Fires of Heaven was introduced, Blink looked much like Affinity. It relied only on the lands (specifically Basic Lands) you had in play. But with Broken Borders, that has all changed. Now Blink can trigger on a variety of game states, and much to the benefit of the player! This wild and wacky mechanic has gotten even more deadly and interesting. Take a look:
