Favorite Magic Quote

This cracks me up every time. This quote has been attributed to Sam Stein:

If I found out my opponent’s 2 year old daughter had cancer and the
only cure was me NOT winning the PTQ, lets just say I hope she likes
chemo, cuz I came to win.

Synecdoche, NY Trailer!

Posted in Geek, Video at 7:01 pm by Evan

Wow, this looks like another bizarre masterpiece. Check out the trailer over at filmroster.

Kaufman writes some absolutely brilliant stuff, and you simply can’t say Being John Malkovich isn’t an absolute classic. One of those movies like Do The Right Thing where they’re taught in film schools while the ‘obvious’ flicks, such as Driving Miss Daisy, which defeated Do The Right Thing for Best Picture Oscar (hah), will never be watched or discussed after their limelight fades. And it’s true. Which would you rather revisit? A thought-provoking, racially challenging movie that looks at stereotypes and their meaning to society, or…Driving Miss Daisy. Yeah. I cherish my Criterion Collection copy of Do The Right Thing.

I’m excited for this one. A guy gets obsessed about performing a play inside an airplane hanger that contains an exact replica of New York inside it…but just a wee bit smaller? Okay. I’m so jazzed for this.

DO WANT: The Red

Posted in Geek, Video at 8:06 pm by Evan

Car guys geek out over old automobiles restored to perfection.

Art buffs geek out over a lost masterpiece pulled from some forgotten collection.

Magic players geek out over a 10-grade Beta Black Lotus.

Videographer nerds? We geek out over a nice camera. And holy shit, have I found one. It’s called The Red (yeah, I know!) and it shoots in 4K resolution. Now that may not mean shit to you, but 4K (by 2,390 pixels vertical) is the magical digital barrier to “truly” make digital the Hollywood standard. Star Wars Episodes 1-3, in contrast, were shot in 1920×1080. Twice the resolution for twice the price? Nope! This thing costs just $17.5K. To shoot Hollywood-quality films. Digitally. Forever (or as long as the hardware holds up, anyway). This is what happens when the billionaires are the visionaries.

To compare, the closest digital equivalent, ie, the stuff that George Lucas deals with, costs around $175,000. Each. Yeah.

Drool, drool, drool. Read it: Wired: Analog Meets Its Match in Red Digital Cinema’s Ultrahigh-Res Camera.

Drafting with Evan: Mono Red

Posted in Geek, Magic the Gathering at 6:53 pm by Evan

Thanks to the tools that Benjamin Peebles-Mundy has written over at his site, you can now send your friends your Magic Online 3.0 drafts. This is super cool and has gotten me excited about drafting online again (gasp!).

That said, “Drafting with…” is a great series at StarCityGames and I’ve done a few drafting shows before. I have a personal mailing list that me and my buddies communicate with, and here is the draft recap I sent them today. Warning: For Magic nerds only!

This was just a classic, and beautiful, mono red draft. Look at those
first four picks. Just look at em! You can’t ask for anything better
than that.

I rolled every match 2-0. It wasn’t close.

The only changes I made while playing were -1 Mudbrawler Raiders (the
2(R/G)(R/G) 3/3 guys) for +1 Mountain. Otherwise, it ran like a
well-oiled machine. Initiate just wins games. It’s incredible.

Cracked.com Destroys Orson Scott Card

Posted in Funny, Geek, Religion at 1:13 am by Evan

In what has to be one of the most entertaining dress-downs I’ve been privy to, check out Orson Scott Card Wants YOU To Rise Up Against The Gay Menace from those wacky guys at cracked.com.

Basically, OSC wants we, as a country, to rise up and overthrow the government in an effort to…

…stop the Iraq war? No…

…stop killing unwanted puppies? No…

…stop gay people from getting married? YES!

That’s right, this idiotic bigot has come right out and said it. This is one of those posts that will be so delicious in a few years when it’s finally legal everywhere and no one will give a shit except the wedding industry, which will be seeing ridiculous record profits due to their new influx of a huge chunk of the population previously denied such overpriced wares. Divorce lawyers will also be licking their chops, as it can only bode well for their job security, and nothing can to be more entertaining than a pair of gay guys arguing over who gets the poodle.

Anyway, fun read. Back to the editing bay I go…

Dear Final Cut Pro: I hate your audio editing tools. I have to convert my mp3s to aiffs? Really? #$@#$

DO WANT: Rock Band for Cheap

Posted in Gaming, Geek at 5:01 pm by Evan

Wow, now this is a hell of a deal. $100 for the whole Rock Band package? Sign me up!

I’ve always wanted the whole Rock Band setup, but the price ($250-ish) was the hold up. No longer.

To those who’ve already had Rock Band for ages and are wondering how in the world I could’ve lived without it…you may now regret how much you paid for yours.
