Mix CD Goodness

For those not aware, one of the small joys in life is a great mix CD. It has tracks from all sorts of artists, and it meshes and mixes just the right smorgasbord of moods to make it memorable.

I make them all of the time and subsquently give them away when their charm has worn off. I made one yesterday afternoon, and thought I would share (tip to all bloggers: When you’re hurting for topics, just go pop culture).

So, with no further ado:

Say Hello To The Rock1. Tally Hall – Good Day
2. Smashing Pumpkins – Frail and Bedazzled
3. Wolfmother – The Joker and The Thief
4. Wolfmother – Pyramid
5. Low Millions – Low Millions
6. Radiohead – Fake Plastic Trees
7. The Postal Service – From Such Great Heights
8. Wilco – Hummingbird
9. Wolf Parade – You Are A Runner And I Am My Father’s Son
10. Angela McClusky – A Thousand Drunken Dreams
11. Tally Hall – Welcome to Tally Hall
12. Destroyer – 3000 Flowers
13. Wolf Parade – I’ll Believe In Anything
14. Ben Folds – Landed
15. The Arcade Fire – The Crown of Love
16. The Strokes – The End Has No End
17. Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah
18. Regina Spektor – Us

Now this is one smashingly good CD, but I’d like to expand on a few things:

1. You Need To Know Tally Hall

Tally Hall is an incredible band from around Detroit Michigan. They went to the University of Michigan and Tally Hall is actually a place there (so is the name of their first record, Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum).

Good Day won the John Lennon Songwriting Competition and it deserves it. Just an incredible piece of melody and soft/loud dynamics. Welcome to Tally Hall is an incredibly cool white-boy-rap-funk fest of goodness. You’re simply not able to find pop music this interesting, inventive, or original anywhere else.

2. Wolfmother Rocks!

I’ve already ranted to Gary about how great these guys are. They sound like a mix of Led Zeppelin and The Who. Basically the music “they don’t make anymore.” My friend Dan says they sound like The White Stripes from ten years ago, but I digress. I think they’re a fantastic rock god guilty pleasure.

Feel free to comment on the excellent tracks above, or forever hold your peace.

PS – Congrats to Ze Frank on hitting his 100th show. I can’t wait for more!

And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was hallelujah

Wolfmother are the greatest thing to happen to music for years. It's true rock as it was meant to be played. You're right - a bit of Led Zep, The Who ... throw in a touch of Sabbath too and one track on the album sounds a tad like The White Stripes in places.
