Burning My Flag
Can we please find something else to talk about beyond banning the burning of the American flag? And a constitutional amendment for chrissakes?
I don’t know about you, but the flag represents our country…to a point. At some point you have to have your people represent you, and not your symbols. Talking about the American flag—probably manufactured in China, ironically enough—as some sort of ‘national landmark’ is akin to calling McDonalds an American Pasttime. You’re not really describing what they mean to the average American.
This is an unenforcable law (see Scott Adams' brilliant take) and another boilerplate issue that one side can tack on the other. What politician wants to be the guy who is for burning flags?
This one. Why? Because it’s freedom of expression and lord knows the last thing that our ridiculous administration stands for is liberties of any sort.
It’s mind-boggling how in 8 years we have lost the ability to view a majority of once-public records, we have virtually thrown away the idea of innocent-until-guilty when the word “terrorist” is involved, and privacy is nothing short of a joke.
I am simply appalled that the New York Times are now traitors for reporting the truth (you know, that pesky thing) about how the government was spying on international business transactions, something that would never have been done under an administration that has respect for its citizens.
And let’s not bring up that BS “If you’ve got nothing to hide, what are you worried about?” argument, because it’s so myopic it’s depressing.
“But it’s just businesses, not individuals!” the pundits cry.
No, you morons, it’s a precedent. It’s something that can be referred to in the future when the government is ready to look at your bank records with no warrant or cause needed.
Oh wait, shit. They're already got that. I need to come up with better examples, I guess.
I’m just sick and tired of people being outrageous in regards to steadfast reporting and honesty in government but will happily let us waste away our Congressional time worrying if Jimmy the Firebug is ready to put Mr. Flamey on the stars and stripes.
Give me a break. Matter of fact, I think I’ll be taking one: Since I’m off work until Wednesday, the posting will be extremely light until then.
Have an excellent weekend, you crazy cats.

If Bush can shit on the constitution, I can burn a flag.
Sci-fi badass author/blogger John Scalzi has a similar, but funnier take:
