Emotional Impact

Last night me and the Mrs. were taking in Wolf Creek, a horror movie set in Australia. To sum up, it’s about a psycho living in Southern Australia who takes advantage of ignorant tourists. He then proceeds to torture them until they’re dead.

Me? I dug it. Cool little flick. Weird, twisted, and exciting.

That's someone's daughter, you know.Ericka, however, had a very different reaction than what I was expecting. As one of the main characters was tied to a pole and “messed with” (ie, the pyscho used his sniper rifle to shoot around her head, etc), she began crying.

Yes, crying.

“Honey, are you okay?”

“This is just messed up,” she said.

I grinned. “Yeah, ain’t it?”

“It’s not funny Evan, people have been treated like this before. Women have had stuff like this done to them before.”

“So have men.”

“But I’m willing to be more women have endured this torture than men have.”

“Well, ah…okay, I agree with that one.”

“That could be someone’s daughter,” she says, getting up and leaving the room.

Which of course makes me feel like a complete and total wanker (thanks to the British for this wonderful term). I mean, how else could I justify that I enjoyed this weird movie and its psycho ways?

This lead to me wondering just what in the hell is in my head to warrant such enjoyment. Aren’t horror movies interesting because they push so hard and go to such extremes? Wouldn’t it be a terribly boring movie if it didn’t have the psycho guy torturing the main characters?

So I am perplexed and a little ashamed.

That could be someone’s daughter rings in my head again.

Damnit. Just when I was enjoying the whole horror movie thing, Ericka had to bring it back to emotions.

To all those unfeeling pricks like me who enjoy movies like Wolf Creek, this post is for you.

Why you leaving me now? There must be some doubt in your mind,
Can't you open your heart? Don't want to be left behind.

Yeah, I had the same thing happen to me. I have a daughter with Down Syndrome. I can't hardly watch Comedy Central, anymore. Life has a way of sucking in special ways, sometimes. I'd advise you to stay away from porn for a few days, lol.
Dammit!

Just went searching to see if there was any nudity in this flick and came across this site:

http://www.screenit.com/movies/2005/wolf_creek.html

Here are a couple of neat little quotes from that nutty site under IMITATIVE BEHAVIOR:
It's possible troubled kids might be enticed to kidnap and torture others as occurs here. then After Mick belches, Ben and one of the girls do the same, followed by Mick farting, causing all to laugh.

This movie is fantastic, but you have to take it as a movie and nothing else. Yes, it could have been someone's daughter, but that's what brings the emotions out. The only thing that would have made it better in my opinion is if they had left things more to your imagination, because the screaming alone was traumatic enough!

For what it's worth, it was filmed in South Australia (where I live), set in Western Australian and is loosely based on the famous Backpacker Murders which occured in New South Wales a few years ago, with a hint of the Peter Falconio case. He was a British backpacker who was allegedly killed by a guy out in the middle of nowhere after their Kombi-van was stopped. His girlfriend survived and they recently jailed the "killer" in the Northern Territory. They have never found his body. The film had a delayed release in the Northern Territory because they thought it may influence the jury.

John Jarrett who plays the killer used to present Playschool (a young kids program) and a magazine style show called "Better Homes & Gardens" with his wife. Nobody here in Australia can see him in the same light any more. Scary as hell.

With regards to "wanker". Being English I find it highly amusing how many English characters in American shows now say "wanker" or "wank" in each show!
