Family Matters, Week of 9-4-05

Woot woot! Fall is almost here, my favorite time of the year. And with it comes tragedy and scarcity of resources and all that that implies. But I won?t drone on that today (feel free to get your NewsPorn where you can find it). Today is fam day, the funnest day of the week around here.

Annie

Annie, my 3 year old WonderChild, has reached that pivotal stage of development where she?s just mean enough to drive me bonkers, but sweet enough to keep her in my good graces.

Or maybe I?m just a dad who is in love with his kids. You know, I?m the Good Cop. I don?t like playing Tyrant Dad. It?s no fun. But, as they say, ?It?s for the best.? Yeah, you tell me that when you make a 3 year old cry.

Anyway, she generally tries to get away with?let?s see here?everything and when I catch her she gets punished (spanking, time-out, the whole bit), and soon after Spongebob is returned due to some bit of good behavior, the cycle begins again.

But it?s not the behavior as much as it is her sister watching. Untainted, she?s learning with a real life teacher just exactly how to drive the parental units bonkers. I try peeps, I try.

Abby

Abby McAbberson is an absolute saint (note I didn?t say angel, these cute epithets only go so far) in comparison to her sister. She eats her vegetables, she takes her baths without huge messes, she goes to sleep with little interference.

In general, she?s a Troublemaker In Training. A TIT, as it were. Heh.

Anyway, with a full weekend of watching the girls behind me, I think I can honestly say my youngest daughter is finally warming up to me in as much that she looks forward to talking to me on the phone and she?s happy to see me come home. Can?t ask for much more than that.

Ericka (her blog)

Ericka has went above and beyond, again. I?m telling you people I?m just not deserving of all this goodness. Firstly she takes it upon herself to provide me with breakfast each morning, no mean feat for any poor soul who?s tried to wake my sleeping ass up, and secondly she works the entire weekend to provide me with a Happy Funtime Birthday. Where does the goodness stop? It doesn?t. Let me give you a prime example:

This past week our car has been in the shop. You know how I keep linking to that Herb Newton Nissan post? Well, there?s a reason for that. Carmax keeps delivering what I want out of a dealer. But I?m getting ahead of myself.

The past month or so our transmission has been ?acting up.? This is, of course, ?bad shit? so I finally arrange to use my Dad?s car while Carmax does their warranty-induced magic (which has paid for itself twice-over now). Well, turns out my bad luck knows no bounds: The damn battery died in my Dad?s car.

So what do I do, change it? Hell no! I first had to find the damn battery, hiding underneath the water reservoir and a huge metal bar, then I simply boosted it off. For three days. Over and over. Yeah, it?s a bit weird. But I promise this has a very interesting conclusion.

So the day after Labor Day (Tuesday), I?m fretting because of a big project at work. I?m nearing completion and I need to go in a bit early. Here?s what my wife does:

? She wakes up early and fixes me breakfast (Peanut Butter Cap?N Crunch = Teh shizzle)
? She goes outside and hunts down someone to boost the dead car
? She comes back inside and wakes me up to eat and politely informs me know she?s done all the hard work that morning.

See what I mean? Incredible. I mean, simple letters aren?t enough. Besides, I can?t write something like this:

?Till then, a thousand kisses, mio dolce amor! but give me none back for they set my blood on fire.?

I mean, I could, but I would antiquate her love with a RAID array or something and fuck it up. But I?ll keep trying to find the best way to thank her.

Etc

Today?s list is a bit short, because the business week was a bit short. And besides, Katrina kinda overrides this stuff by a mile.

? Rock Star: INXS Media Centre ? Yes, it?s spelled funny. This is officially my favorite TV show, and if JD would please just join the damn band so we can get this over with I?d appreciate it. Say goodbye to Jordis tonight, and prepare for Marty?s heartbreak during the final show. He did have the best original song last night, though. (And the mp3?s not up yet! Argh)

? Color Scheme Generator ? Can?t get enough of Colour Lovers? This site?s for you. Nice and automated like.

? Gas Price Watch ? Does your budget suffer like mine does when you fill up?

? The Hidden Speechwriter ? Apparently this is old hat according to Jeneane, but hey, it?s New To Me.

? Jim's River Rats Saga ? Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4 ? Jim kicks all kinds of ass with his amusing multi-part tale of river rafting/kayaking.

Until tomorrow peeps, as a special surprise see what pops up when you put your mouse pointer over the lyric quote this week. See that? Genius.

The absence of God will bring you comfort, baby
And planning?s for the poor so let?s pretend that we?re rich
