Cubism

I play a lot of Magic the Gathering. I don't know about you, but most of us have hobbies that are social in nature. Sometimes they are deceptively anti-social (read: Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games), and other times you can incorporate family into these activities as well.

For example, we had a tradition for many years in my family that we would play a board or card game at all large get-togethers. This includes Monopoly and their ilk, though we quickly tired of Monopoly (as everyone does) and moved on to more interesting games. This tradition has stalled in the past year or two, and I miss it dearly.

You know that blog I won't shut up about, Jim over at Outpost-1? We had a long period of time of board game happenings, and I loved it. Now that this has been curbed, for a variety of reasons, I miss it dearly. It appears that Magic has filled this void better than any other social-based time-waster I can think of.

As time goes on, you realize that the best part of this game is sharing in your enthusiasm over playing, strategy, and finding how to win. Last week I took the initiative after reading a fantastic article over at StarCityGames: I made a cube.

A cube consists of the most powerful, "Broken" (ie, overpowered) cards in Magic, drafting them (read about a draft here), and then of course playing with them. We've had a huge amount of pure fun doing this and since I print out copies of the uber-expensive cards and tape them onto worthless common cards, the fun is affordable.

I'd love to pontificate more about social gaming, but unfortunately I'm out of time. I'm curious of your own social gaming rituals, and if you have any please share. I'd love to hear what excites you and your group of friends and loved ones as you gather to play. See ya next week.

I was feelin' alright
And if I ever was myself I wasn't that night
