Family Matters, Week of 5-30-05
It?s that time of the week folks. For those who aren?t aware, I do a weekly rundown of my family (wife + 2 daughters) happenings. With that said, let?s get into it:
Annie
We had one of those dreaded Near Death Experiences the other day. Well, when I say ?we? I mean ?Ericka? because I was at work at the time.
You see, during the summer, my niece Marissa will come over to stay and when she does she helps Ericka take the kids to the pool provided by the apartment complex. Normally Ericka wouldn?t be able to cover this on her own, so Marissa fills a much-needed void.
Matter of fact, Marissa probably saved Annie?s life.
Here?s the sequence: Ericka is doing something with Abby out of the pool, Annie standing beside her, and Marissa is somewhere in the pool/on the edge, etc. Ericka warns Annie not to get in the pool without her floaties (ie, the blow-up devices that go around her upper arm). Ericka turns back to deal with Abby when she hears Marissa call?
?Ericka, Annie doesn?t have her floaties on!?
Ericka turns. Thump thump, goes her heart.
Ericka sees only the top of Annie?s head above the water. Thump thump. Thump thump. She immediately jumps in after her.
Rising up out of the water, Ericka watches Annie cough up the water she?s swallowed and perhaps breathed in. Thoroughly freaked out (and that goes for both), they?re both scared and worried, and Ericka convinces Annie that it?s okay and recognizes that if she doesn?t get Annie back in the water before they leave she may never get back in. So she does.
It?s only later that Ericka breaks down, realizing how close she came to losing her own daughter. I?m, of course, not quite as emotional and understanding as she would like, but I do my best to assure her that it?s all for the best, no need to worry now.
But secretly, I mask my fears of loss and silently appreciate my daughter still hanging out in the living room, making all that racket. I?d much rather have the racket than the cold silence that others must live with.
Abby
On a lighter note, gigglebox (aka Abbers, aka Abs) is having a bit of a problem using an almost-3 year old?s sleep schedule when the 1 year old just doesn?t have the same amount of energy for it.
Me and Ericka were talking the other night about how Abby is so mean/irritable in the evenings when I realized that at her age, Annie was taking two naps a day, something slowly phased out as she got older. Abby didn?t get the benefit of two naps or the transition, which frankly sucks. However, due to the make-up of household duties/chores and Ericka?s well being, it?s good for her to get a few hours to herself in the middle of the day, instead of rotating a nap schedule where she would have just one kid with her for something like 5?6 hours.
So for now we?ll just leave things as they are and try our best to baby our baby when it gets past 8PM.
Ericka (her blog)
My wife, the life saver, has completed her classes and over the holiday weekend made an exquisite Devil?s Food/Peppermint Icing cake that was to die for?that is, until Annie picked up the cake container and turned it upside down. Then it became more like Pretty Damn Edible Squish Cake.
We also had a close call to meet up with her family who came to vacation in nearby Pigeon Forge, but unfortunately they can?t make it up to Knoxville or Oak Ridge, so perhaps we?ll get to see them next time. Ericka, and in particular her mom, were very saddened by these events.
Etc
Ah yes, random stuff. Let?s hit it:
? Coldplay?s X and Y is pretty damn excellent. Not great, but no slouch. It?s officially recommended.
? I heard this show was good, and I?m sure I?ll have no problem convincing my reality TV-lovin wife to watch it with me.
? Jim is updating with increased frequency. Excellent.
