Forgotten a Windows Administrator Password?

Find the answer on this page. It reset a Windows XP SP2 Admin password no problem, just make sure you set it to blank and not an actual string (or it won’t work). The boot CD downloaded, burned, and ran just perfectly on this laptop I was having trouble with. It works on any flavor of Windows, Windows NT, Windows 98 (SE too), Server 2000, Server 2003, etc.

For any other sys admins in a similar perdicament, I hope this helped!

In more sys admin news, we just got in our new Dell Poweredge 1800 server. This thing is a beast. I now get to go pla—er, ‘configure’ it.

Hey Evan,

I've also used the psTools suite to do this. If you haven't tried this suite, I recommend you at least check them out.

It's got a pretty nifty set of admin-tools.

Sometimes a named XP user who has administrator privileges forgets his or her password and does not have a password reset disk.
First, if anyone else has administrator privileges have him/her sign on, go to control panel, manage users, and eliminate the forgetful administrator's password. He or she can then sign on and establish a new password.
If there are only "limited" users, who cannot reset other passwords, a possible solution to this problem is to boot up in SAFE MODE (restart computer, tap F8 key repeatedly until safe mode option appears). Sign on as the "Administrator" rather than your named account. As "administrator," go to control panel, manage users, and eliminate or change the named-adminsitrator's password. Restart computer in regular mode and the forgetful named administrator's account will either not have a password or will have the new, hopefully remembered, one.
