The Gift and The Curse
Remember last week when I said I was going to attend the Grand Prix Qualifier in Knoxville? Well, I won that (yay, woo). And with that comes the ability to get 3?free byes in the upcoming Grand Prix Detroit. Everything was great until I asked?
?So, when is the Grand Prix? Three, four weeks??
?This weekend,? the tourney organizer says, not even looking up from his laptop.
?WHAT?!?
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I win a great opportunity and suddenly I?m forced to change my entire life in regards to the end of this week so I can drive 8 hours to get to Detroit.
Why is it imperitive I go there? Here?s today?s lesson on Amateur Goodness: You see, as I have no ?Pro Points? I am technically an Amateur Magic Player. This affords me the ability to be eligible for Amateur prizes. What that means is that if I get 50th place, but I?m the top ranked Amateur amongst the field (ie, 1st ? 49th place were pros), I?ll take home $1,500. Yeah, I know, that?s what I said when I figured that out. So now you understand the need to get up there.
Thankfully, a gracious player told me of his intention to go to Michigan this weekend and while I won?t be able to ride up there with his group, a floor to sleep on is definitely better than sleeping in the car. Anything is better than sleeping in the car, let?s just get that out of the way.
So with a little time, trouble, and money, I should make it up to Detroit in hopes of taking home some cash. I?m pretty good at Limited formats (ie, sealed deck and draft), so I?m confident I can do well. Fingers crossed.
In other news, I?ve been accepted into the Media Bloggers Association, and I think that?s pretty sweet. I can now attend BlogNashville with no problems in terms of scheduling. Very, very cool. I?ve also been given the Best Blog in Tennessee award, and there ain?t nothing wrong with that.
Lastly I got my chance to see Ralphie May last Friday, and let me tell you we had the best seats. And I?m not just saying we could see the comic, no, we could interact with him (I even got heckled by his opening act!), and had my feet propped up on the stage! Yes, I know, it couldn?t get much better. Anyway, he was as funny as ever and did another 25 minutes of material because we were the last show (tip: Always go see the last comedy show of the night, you?ll get a better deal). If he?s coming near you I?d suggest you see him, he?s a funny guy.
I just remembered that Mondays were supposed to be part of the Patented Family Update(tm). I guess that will shift to Tuesday. Don?t you just love blogs? You think about rescheduling something and it just happens. Ah, progress.

I was confused for quite a while reading this post. At first, I thought you were talking about racing cars. Then I thought you were talking about a poker tournament. It was only when I went back and clicked the first link that I realised when you said 'amateur magic player' you meant 'Magic: The Gathering', and not 'magic' in a similar way to, say, Orlando Magic. Hmmmm... I fear you may find this comment as confusing as I found your post...
Haha, I'm sorry about that. I'll be more clear in future posts :)
