Hello everyone. I apologize for the late post, I have been terribly busy lately.
You see, at work I got a Sweet Pimpin New Machine. When this happens, after I finish geeking out, I immediately begin the process of Transfer.
Transfer is many things. It is old programs, settings, materials, configurations, and logins.
The latter there is underestimated. If you're anything like me, you've grown fat off the land of Firefox or IE remembering those silly passwords for you.
Your favorite website, that forum, your bank login screen (oh, just admit it).
So with those lost, you begin to realize that you probably have a lot of garbage that doesn't need to move over. These could be old files, movie trailers, mp3s that turned bad (ie, download + regret), or any number of things. The difference is, now you get the choice of trying to sort through them or doing a mass exodus to the new box.
I mean, the new one has a bigger hard drive, right? (They all do.) So with that said, there are some benefits to moving:
1 - Bigger, better, faster. 'Nuff said.
2 - You get all of your trial software back. For example, I can now use Blogjet for another 30 days! Woohoo!
3 - You normally find newer versions of old programs you were relying on, as you had to go find and re-download (or sift through the myriad of executables in your download folder), hence you actually get more than what you originally had for the same effort.
But no matter what the outcome, no matter how smooth the move, there is always a timesink with these operations. It also seems like moving from a Laptop -> Desktop is somewhat harder than just Tower to Tower. Maybe its me, but the interface difference, the goofy little programs you have to make sure aren't spyware or some shareware junk you tried a few years ago and immeidately abandoned (Audio Galaxy Plus? Maybe a flash game? WAV editor? Oh yeah, it's that stupid laptop sound driver...), all add up to long stretches of head scratching.
But in the end, I am very very pleased with the new box. I'll geek out on specs tomorrow, but for now, my Tuesday post is in, just a few minutes before the bell.
